Preventing frostbites

The winter season is obviously at risk for frostbite, hiking or nature watching while remaining static. Here are some tips on prevention and possible treatment.
Signs and symptoms: very cold feet, hands and extremities, pain, loss of sensation. Always be taken seriously!

What to do: Stop, put the best possible, sheltered from the wind and warm the affected part (removing the shoe if it is the foot). The best method is to put under the armpit of another person. Change wet socks and gloves if possible.

Maximum 10-minute attempt on the spot!

The feeling comes back = we can continue the hike, but watch out for.

The sensation does not return = emergency evacuation if possible, or go to a warm shelter closest to passive warming.

Passive warming in hut or base camp to the affected part in a warm bath, 37 ° C approx. "Warm Baby" with disinfectant in it (Betadine). Blisters may form, and the pain will be intense. If you have drugs against pain and aspirin can give subject to medical delegation. Evacuate as soon as possible!

But: do not return to the cold or walking on foot thawed!

Drink plenty and eat sweet.

Prevention: dry socks, dry gloves, buddy and problems taken seriously.

The trick: for dry feet and remain warmer, wool socks are excellent, and dusting the feet before putting his socks eliminates the need of extra moisture, which increases the risk.
